Cola

This seemingly ordinary drink holds a rich history, deeply intertwined with the kola plant, which lends it its name and some of its characteristic flavor.

The kola plant, native to the tropical rainforests of Africa, produces seeds known as kola nuts. These nuts have been chewed for centuries by indigenous people for their stimulating effects, owing to their high caffeine content.

When John Stith Pemberton concocted the first batch of Coca-Cola in 1886, he used an extract from these kola nuts, combined with coca leaf extract, sugar, and a secret blend of aromatic ingredients. This mixture created a beverage that was not only refreshing but also invigorating 🧊🌿

The original Coca-Cola recipe is one of the most closely guarded trade secrets in the world. Despite numerous claims and alleged leaks over the years, the exact formula remains a mystery. In 2011, a document surfaced, purporting to reveal the recipe as published in an old newspaper article. However, Coca-Cola has neither confirmed nor denied its authenticity, and the allure of the secret remains intact.

What is known is that the modern recipe no longer contains coca leaf extract, following regulations in the early 20th century. Instead, a "spent" coca leaf extract is used, which has had its cocaine content removed. The kola nut extract, however, has been replaced by other natural and artificial flavorings.
